What is Prolotherapy?

It treats the UNDERLYING CAUSE of joint pain and instability. Read Dr. Johnson's Paper regarding Connective Tissue Damage Syndrome
Your body has two healing processes - the low level ‘daily maintenance’ process, and the much larger ‘acute injury’ process, which is the huge ‘burst of healing’ that happens for a few weeks after, say, a major operation. All other ‘conservative’ treatments simply encourage the weaker ‘maintenance’ system. Prolotherapy is the only medical treatment that is designed to trigger the much more powerful ‘acute injury’ system to heal damaged structures.
It prompts healing in ligaments, tendons, and cartilage.
It is 80% or more effective in curing pain caused by damaged, unhealed connective tissue.

Prolotherapy, or ‘Fibroproliferative Therapy’, is a technique that was developed in the 1930’s and 1940’s by several medical practitioners and researchers. It consists of placing a ‘proliferant solution’ in a damaged tendon or ligament. This solution then triggers the body’s healing response system, which in turn produces healing in the damaged structure, ultimately returning this structure to full load-bearing capacity. This in turn will stop pain and instability in the affected joint.

Currently Prolotherapy is used to do three things. It is used to treat chronic pain in joints that is caused by unhealed connective tissue damage. It is used to treat cartilage loss in joints, particularly knee and hip joints, that causes pain with use. It is also used in the context of acute injuries, particularly sports injuries, when you want healing to be accelerated. Prolotherapy can help a competitive athlete get back in the game faster.

Prolotherapy is not just a useful treatment to relieve pain. It is certainly that, but in addition, this treatment teaches us a lot about what is actually wrong with people - lessons that the medical community as a whole has yet to learn. Very often, connective tissue damage produces a very confusing clinical picture - pains that vary in location, nature, and intensity, as well as muscle malfunctions and referred symptoms such as pain and numbness... Diagnostic studies, particularly imaging studies, are often normal or, worse, may show other findings to which a patient’s symptoms are mistakenly attributed. Connective tissue damage is often mistaken for inflammation. Prolotherapy, in the hands of a skilled practitioner, can solve many vexing and painful medical mysteries.
