Sports Injuries

"I wouldn't be skiing now if it weren't for Prolotherapy"
Bode Miller, U.S. Olympic Ski Team
ESPN Interview, Feb. 2006

Bode Miller, Prolotherapy patient

Sports injuries take many forms. There is the obvious sprain or strain. There is the slowly emerging pain during activity, that begins to really get in your way. There is the chronic pain that tests your commitment to your activities. Sometimes the pain convinces you that it just isn't worth it.

Don't let the pain win.

You know you need to stay in the game. You need to grow, to develop your full potential. You want to be good, maybe the best. You want that scholarship. You want to stay healthy, vigorous, and strong. You want to keep the old equipment going for many more years, and live to play with your grandchildren—not just play, buy play hard!

We engage in many different sports for many different reasons. We all have one common enemy: Painful Injuries

What role could Prolotherapy play in the game you play?

Acute Injuries

Don't let your injury sideline you for the whole season.

Most injuries heal completely. In situations where you need to get back in the game quickly, Prolotherapy can accelerate healing and promote more complete healing. If you are in training, or in the middle of your season, and don't want to be sidelined with an injury, we can help.

A special note is in order here regarding management of acute injuries. Would you like to do everything possible to keep yourself from healing your injured tissue?

If so, just ice down the injury, wrap it tightly, then take anti-inflammatory medication (the standard RICE formula). This will very effectively keep your immune system from triggering your healing mechanism. This doesn't sound like something you want to do? Then try treating your acute injuries differently. Use Tylenol or Ultram (tramadol) for pain control, use heat, and keep using the affected part as much as you can. You will heal faster and stronger.

Chronic Injuries

Stop taping yourself up for every competition.

These are the annoying things that wear you down, slow you down, then sit you down. From neck pain due to weightlifting to runners plantar fasciitis, from tennis elbow to golfers' back pain, Prolotherapy can usually return you to mid-season form with a few treatments. Virtually all pain from athletic injuries arises from damaged, unhealed connective tissue.

This includes:

Neck pain: from weightlifting, wrestling and football injuries, etc.

Shoulder pain: from partial rotator cuff tears, labral tears, and trapezius tendon pain.

Upper back pain: from trigger points in the mid back, scapula, and ribcage. From costochondritis, old rib fracture, and sternal injuries.

Low back pain: including that seen in association with bulging disks, degenerated disks, arthritis, and other x-ray abnormalities. SI joint problems generally respond very well to Prolotherapy. Almost any sport can produce a back injury, or aggravate one.

Groin and hamstring pain: most things termed 'groin strain' and 'hamstring pull' are damaged tendinous insertions on the pubic arch. If these do not heal promptly, or seem prone to re-injury, then Prolotherapy can be of great benefit.

Hip pain: Runners, skiers, and other athletes can develop hip pain. Ligament damage in this area can produce a reflex weakness in the muscles of the hip girdle, compromising your performance even if you can 'play through the pain'. Prolotherapy can usually help you return to peak performance, pain free.

Knee injury: Most painful knee injuries, even involving cartilage damage, can be improved or healed with Prolotherapy. Two exceptions to this are total ACL loss, and 'locking' knees due to a cartilage tear or fragment. In situations where a partial ligament tear is involved, Prolotherapy can promote healing and strength. This improves knee stability and helps prevent re-injury. My personal belief is that many careers could be lengthened and many people's performance could be improved by utilizing this treatment.

Elbow injury: Golfer's elbow, tennis elbow, and thrower's elbow are only some of the problems we can successfully treat. Last year a high school gymnast came to see me following an elbow dislocation. I was able to return her to competition without pain, and without a brace, after an Orthopaedic surgeon had recommended elbow surgery as the only option which might allow her to continue to compete.

Ankle injury: Some athletes repeatedly sprain their ankle. This is often due to unhealed damage from their initial injury. When ankles are sprained, they are very often subject to being wrapped, iced, and treated with anti-inflammatory medication. This often leads to poor healing, and later vulnerability to injury. Prolotherapy can be used in an acute setting. It is more often used in people with ankle instability and recurring injury.

Foot and hand injury: everything from turf toe to a sprained wrist can heal more quickly with Prolotherapy. Plantar fasciitis, Achilles tendon strain, and other connective tissue injuries usually respond very well to Prolotherapy.

With some injuries, Prolotherapy alone may be the solution. In other situations, Prolotherapy may be part of an integrated strategy involving your coach, trainer, physical therapist, chiropractor, Orthopaedic surgeon, and other professionals, that will get you back to maximum capacity as quickly as possible.

Get back in the game...with Prolotherapy.
