How do I find a doctor who gives Prolotherapy Treatments? |
Currently there are approximately 500 physicians in the country administering Prolotherapy. At present, the only ways to learn these techniques are from training under the supervision of a physician skilled in the technique, or attending a training course. Because there are no standardized training requirements before a physician offers Prolotherapy, it is fair to ask a doctor how he got his training. IF PROLOTHERAPY IS SUCH A GREAT TREATMENT, WHY DO ONLY 500 DOCTORS IN THE WHOLE COUNTRY DO IT?
Great question. I asked the same question. (see The Doctor’s own story) Prolotherapy treatments have roots that can be traced back to Hippocrates himself. Injection Sclerotherapy, the forerunner of modern Prolotherapy, was practiced in the 1800’s with very good results. Several physicians in the early 20th century, notably Dr. George Hackett, pioneered the techniques currently employed. Dr. Hackett, a trauma surgeon in Canton, Ohio, did considerable clinical and basic science research on these techniques. He treated thousands of patients with Prolotherapy, and authored a textbook that is still one of the most important references in this field. Dr. Hackett trained a number of physicians in these techniques in the 1950’s. His principle disciple, though, was Dr. Gustav Hemwall, from Chicago. Dr. Hemwall likewise trained a number of physicians in these techniques. Toward the end of his life, Dr. Hemwall mentored a young physician, Dr. Ross Hauser, and ultimately turned over to him not only his medical practice, but also his own and Dr. Hackett’s manuscripts, research papers, etc. Dr. Hauser has been my friend for over two decades. After he successfully treated my back pain, I became very interested in learning to administer Prolotherapy. He has been kind enough to mentor me in these techniques.
